At note from Laura:
It is almost that day to honor our Dads for all they do!! My Dad, Don Clark, was diagnosed with ALS a little over a year ago, with Father's Day right around the corner. After his diagnosis I decided I wanted to do something to show him support and Father's Day seemed like a great day to do so. With the help of family, friends, and Lee Farms we were able to raise a little over $900 last year. This year Lee farms is putting on the Strawberry Stampede and has generously offered half of the proceeds to be donated to the ALSA. We will also be collecting donations.
ALS is such a cruel disease and leaves us all feeling a bit helpless. The one thing I felt I could do to show my support was to find a way to raise more money and awareness to help fight this disease. I can't imagine the difficulty my Dad faces every day as his muscles deteriorate and breathing becomes more difficult but his awareness of it all remains the same. I often try to put myself in his shoes and the main thing I think of is what I would want my legacy to be and to know that I had an impact on others. What I have learned the most is to be thankful, for all the things that seem so little, but mean so much. And with this in mind, I think the best way to honor someone who is slowly losing the ability to walk is to use the ability we still have and make the most of everyday. There are lessons to be learned in everything. I have learned how lucky I am to be able to breath and walk and run, and use my voice to tell everyone I love that I love them. I spend each day, even if just once, showing appreciation for all the gifts I have.
The Strawberry Stampede is another way to honor that. While most people with ALS can't participate, I suspect they would hope that anyone who can and especially those who find joy in running would do so as much as possible while they are able. So, please help us honor my Dad and all those who have fought and continue to fight against ALS by lending your legs and donations to the Lee Farms Strawberry Stampede on Father's Day, June 15th!!
