About The Beer Mile
Mission
We are here to promote the sport of the beer mile so that more people have the opportunity to partake in an event that has entertained and united many running clubs, teams, and communities across the globe.
What is a beer mile?
The Beer Mile is equal parts gastric challenge and athletic endeavor, requiring competitors to drink a 355ml beer (5% minimum ABV) before every quarter mile of the race, totaling four beers over the one-mile course. See the official beer mile rules here.
Purpose
The beer mile is all about having fun and competing for bragging rights. Running and drinking enthusiasts alike come together in this underground event to test their fitness and stomach capacity in a race to consume four beers and run four laps around a track faster than competitors.
The once siloed, sub-culture of this extreme sport has begun its leap into the mainstream the past few years with sanctioned, world championship events. We are here to push the progression of the beer mile into the TV of every home and make it the next big water cooler topic at all workplaces near you.
Official Event Rules
- Each competitor drinks four cans of beer and runs four laps around a standard 400m (0.25 mile) loop (start with chugging a beer, then run a lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap - finish). Bottles are NOT permitted at the 2022 event location.
- Beer must be consumed before the lap begins within the transition area. The transition area is the 9-meter zone between the waterfall starting line for a mile race and the finish line of a 400m (0.25 mile) loop.
- The race begins with competitors lined up on the mile starting line, drinking the first beer in the transition zone described in the step above. This ensures competitors cover a complete mile. Competitors can walk/move in the transition area while drinking, but all beer must be consumed in the transition area before setting off to run a lap.
- Women also drink four beers and run four laps (some past rule lists only required ladies to drink three beers).
- Competitors must drink canned beer that is no less than 355mL (12 Oz) in volume, which is the standard can/bottle size in the USA and some other countries.
- No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an advantage by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate (e.g. wide mouth cans).
- Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner. (e.g. no shotgunning, puncturing the can, squeezing the can, etc.). No straws or other aids allowed that speed up the pouring process. The only action allowed is opening the can with the tab at the top.
- Beer must be a minimum of 5% alcohol by volume. Hard ciders, hard sodas, and other alcoholic sugary drinks will not suffice. The beer must be a fermented alcoholic beverage brewed from malted cereal grains and flavored with hops.
- Each beer can must not be opened until the competitor enters the transition zone on each lap.
- Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the completion of their 4th lap). Vomiting more than once during the race still only requires one penalty lap at the end.
- When attempting a performance for the official records, it is recommended to provide video evidence of the race and prove that all beer was sufficiently drank. This can be achieved by tipping the empty beer over your head after each chug to verify an empty vessel or by collecting the containers and pouring the contents into a measuring cup to prove there is less than 4oz of liquid/foam remaining total across all four beers.

To date, the Butler County Milers have hosted more than 400 organized events free and open to the public. Over the past 2.5+ years our group has consistently supported many small local businesses deeply impacted throughout the pandemic. Our group has organized local trash cleanups, food drive donations, and supported local charities as well. We believe in being stewards of our trails, our streets, and communities. We also believe that improving one's own life, health, and well-being through running, community, and social comradery is a right to be shared by all, not a privilege.
Our group was formed in January of 2020 in the hopes of bringing together a community of people who share a love of running and being active. We offer group events throughout each week for walkers, runners and hikers. Together, we are exploring Butler County one mile at a time!
We love our local community and strive to support it in as many ways as we can, from supporting small businesses to organizing regular trash walks. It is our mission to not only work towards bettering ourselves, but the communities we run in as well.
Thank you to all who have supported us through the past 2.5+ years and continue to support us going forward.
