What is Tourette Syndrome (TS)?

The Tourette Association of America states, "Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that becomes evident in early childhood or adolescence. It is part of the spectrum of Tic Disorders and is characterized by motor and vocal tics. In the United States, it is estimated that 1 out of every 160 children between the ages of 5-17 has TS and that 1 out of every 100 children has TS or another Tic Disorder" (Tourette Association of America). For more information about TS, take a look at the websites listed below. Each website listed has information about TS, podcasts, videos, and other resources to help expand your knowledge of TS.

TS Information Week

During the week of the race (April 18th-25th), everyone will be welcome to join Zoom meetings featuring guest speakers from the PA Tourette Syndrome Alliance. These speakers will participate in Q&A sessions throughout the week in order to share their experiences and knowledge about TS.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about Tourette Syndrome from people who have first-hand experience.  This will be a platform for attendees to openly ask questions and learn more about TS. Links to the Zoom meetings will be posted on this website during the week of the race.

Run Our Virtual 5K to Support and Raise Awareness for Tourette Syndrome!

From April 18th to April 25th 2021 participants will be able to race the 5K virtually, on their own course, on their own schedule, and upload their times to this website. Registration begins on February 15th and ends on April 25th.  There will be prizes awarded to the top three times in each bracket.  The brackets will be broken down into men and women and age groups from 0-17, 18-49, 50+.  Each runner will receive a bib and a shirt for participating. The race will be limited to 500 runners in total.

Who We Are

Our names are Madeline and Etielle and we are seniors at Grove City College in Grove City, PA. I (Madeline) study elementary education and Etielle studies both special education and elementary education. For one of our classes this semester, we were tasked to create a community project. We decided to focus our project on advocating for people with Tourette Syndrome. Through our educational experiences, we realized that many people, including ourselves, do not understand what Tourette Syndrome is. To meet our desire to advocate for those who have Tourette Syndrome, we created a platform for people with TS to share their stories and we are hosting this virtual 5K to raise money.  We hope you will join them as we run and learn about Tourette Syndrome, virtually!
