Description

On September 7th, Electric City Triathlon will be hosting its first ever Backyard Ultramarathon, at the 2024 Trek-on-athon Backyard Ultra! This non-traditional backyard ultra will consist of 3.1 mile loop, which runners will have 45 minutes to complete. After completion, runners may use the extra time left in their 45 minutes to prepare for another loop. When the 45 minutes is up, another loop will start and will continue until one runner is left. How many loops can you complete?

This event is held in Scranton's Nay Aug Park, which is still open to traffic, but we will ensure that any intersections will be properly monitored to ensure the safety of our runners.

Race Information

The race will start at exactly 9:00 am. Runners must be on the start line before this starting time, to ensure everyone starts at exactly 9:00 am. When the time starts, runners must run and complete the entire 3.1 mile loop in under 45 minutes. Runners may run at any pace they would like, but must cross the finish line before the next time interval to be considered for the next lap. If runners do not cross the finish before the 45 minute time slot, the runner is eliminated from the rest of the race, and will be awarded accordingly. The next loop will start exactly on the next interval, which after the start would be 9:45 am.

The race will only stop under certain circumstances. At the start of any given loop, if there is only one runner remaining, they must run one more 3.1 mile loop than the runner up, to be crowned the winner of the race. If the start of any given loop is about to start, and there are no runners choosing to run or there are no qualifiers for the next loop, the race ends and there is no winner. Of course, all runners will be awarded accordingly, but there will be no one winner of the race.

Runners will need to check in at least 30 minutes before the start of the race (Start Time 9:00am)

Runners will need to check in after each lap.

Runners must be in the marked starting area before the start of each loop to be able to run. Runners can choose to drop out at any point, but runners must check out with race directors before leaving the park. The race will continue until one person is left.

There will be a 5 minute, 2 minute and 1 minute warning before the start of each loop. This is to alert runners to make their way back to starting area if they want to start the next loop. You may not leave the course, except to use the on course porta potties, once the loop has started. After checking in after any given loop, you may choose to do what you please, until the start of the next loop.

The course will consist of two loops of the park, of which will be ran majority on road with some paved trail and some gravel. Runners will start in the northernmost fields of the park, run towards the bottom, and make their way back towards the fields. The first loop will cut left just before the finish, and the second lap will continue straight into where runner's started.

Parking

Nay Aug Park has ample parking for all our participants. We ask that runners and spectators use these three lots pictured above. This way, parking on the city streets can be avoided.

Seating

Seating will be allowed for runners and athlete crews on the field highlighted in orange. Be mindful that this is close to start/finish and parts of the course, so try to stay off the dirt trails. Runners are allowed no more than a 10x10 tent for setup in the field. Runners can bring whatever they would like to use under the tent. This will help to sectionalize the field up, so that every runner gets a equal amount of space. If additional seating is needed, other fields will be set up for usage.

Packet Pick-Up and Race Briefing

With registration, everyone will receive an event t-shirt and event participant medals if they are not the final person standing. The final runner will receive a Trek-on-athon trophy and a cash prize. Registration will be all online, and packet pickup will be Thursday and Friday before the event at a TBD location and time. An athlete briefing will also be held the same Friday as packet pickup, at a TBD location and time. This race briefing is highly encouraged! It will help you to get to know the rules and course a little bit better.

Course Nutrition and Rules

On-course nutrition will NOT be present during the race. There will be an aid station near the start and finish line of the race, which will have water and a carbohydrate drink for runners to utilize. Every runner is responsible for bringing their own food, drinks, clothing and other necessities for the race. IF YOU ARE TO BE STILL RUNNING BY DUSK, THERE WILL BE NIGHT RUNNING. The road is not even in all places so we REQUIRE all runners who are running during the night to wear a headlamp. Everything that you need for the headlamp (batteries, spare) should also be brought by the participants.
