About This Cause

On June 4th, only 6 days after his high school graduation, Holden Ludwig took a direct driver side hit in his vehicle and suffered a traumatic brain injury. After 6 weeks in the ICU, Holden was moved to the Shepherd Center where he is currently undergoing rehab. Holden has faced numerous challenges that go along with a traumatic brain injury--each day is a different challenge. His most recent hurdle that he has overcome is a sacral wound flap surgery. After bed rest for 3 weeks, Holden is building his way back up in wheelchair time. The medical team at Shepherd is currently focusing on getting his lungs strong and his cough reflex to quicken so that he can get his tracheotomy tube removed. According to the latest Coma Recovery Scale Assessment, Holden has emerged, meaning he is holding attention a little longer and performs functional tasks like brushing his teeth or putting on a hat. He is unable to communicate thus far.

As you can imagine, the family has incurred great expenses. In addition to the large expenses accumulated during Holden’s ICU stay, there are many expenses that lie ahead. Holden will eventually transition back to the Ludwig home. While insurance will cover his bed and main wheelchair, the financial responsibility for a shower wheelchair and electric lift to get Holden in and out of bed will fall on the family. He will receive a minimum amount of therapy and any additional therapies will be at cost to the family, and transportation for Holden to get to and from follow up appointments will only be covered at 50%. In addition to these expenses, the Ludwig’s are in the process of making modifications to their home in order to make it wheelchair accessible. Transforming the downstairs den to Holden’s bedroom, relocating the laundry to the upstairs, and transforming the current laundry room into a full wheelchair accessible bathroom are just some of the home renovations required.

While the road that lies ahead continues to be long and uncertain, the Ludwig Family has maintained a spirit of positivity and hope! Holden is a recent graduate from Lambert High School, Kohler attends Riverwatch Middle School, and Ronan & Briar attend Sharon Elementary. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go directly to the Ludwig Family.
