2020 Virtual 5K for Safe Texas Streets

Sat November 7 - Sat November 14 Austin, TX 78701 US

Description

We walk, run, and roll to honor those who have been hurt in the Texas transportation system and to bring attention to the need for action by our state and local elected officials to bring an end to the epidemic of traffic deaths in Texas.

Vision Zero Texas leads the movement to end traffic deaths in the State of Texas. We work with local volunteer advocates and advocacy organizations, public officials, and community organizations across the state to help Texas governments adopt Vision Zero goals and transform policies and streets get to zero.

The 2020 Virtual 5K for Safe Texas Streets will take place Saturday, November 7 to Saturday, November 14, beginning on the 20th anniversary of the last day that no one died on Texas streets and roads, November 7, 2000, and ending the day before the annual World Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Traffic Violence on November 15, 2020.

Funds raised through this campaign will benefit Farm&City, a 501c3 nonprofit, and will serve as the bedrock for the Vision Zero Texas movement in 2021. Meeting our $25,000 goal will allow hiring the first full-time Director of Vision Zero Texas, dedicated to spreading Vision Zero statewide and supporting Central Texas Families for Safe Streets (CTFSS) and launching similar Families for Safe Streets groups across the state. Passing this goal will allow more rapid expansion of Vision Zero Texas work statewide and more substantial support for FSS chapters.

During the week of November 7-14, each participant will go on a walk, run, or roll on their own or in small, COVID-safe groups. On your outing, take note of where transportation infrastructure and urban design make you feel safe or unsafe, post on social media with the hashtag #WalkForSafeTexasStreets, and add those notes to a survey you will complete at the end of your experience. Or, run as fast as you can and share that with us! Use a run-tracking app to show us your route and time!

Farm&City staff and Central Texas Families for Safe Streets volunteers will be in touch throughout the process to give you more information about the movement to end traffic deaths, actions you can take to support the cause, and support for your efforts.

CTFSS serves as a resource for individuals and families who have been affected through loss and suffering from traffic violence involving a motor vehicle. CTFSS’s mission is to promote alternative and safe transportation options through policy and legislation, advocacy, community outreach and empowerment.

Why a Virtual 5K?

The key is flexibility – a virtual 5K can be run (or walked or rolled) from any location you choose – on the road, the trail, treadmill, or track. You choose your distance, run at your own pace, and time it yourself. When you register we will email you a bib that you can wear when you participate. When you’ve completed your distance, submit your time (and hopefully a picture of yourself wearing your bib and any urban design features you want to share) and we will send you a completion certificate and thank you gift.

You'll also receive a Safe Streets Advocacy Packet and an invitation to a Safe Streets Panel on December 9th!
