Add’l….
Our racing mission continues to be to produce affordable, hedonistically fun & athletically competitive races, that are technically sound (correctly-measured courses with minimum turns and visible distance – mile or Km – markers), that also benefit some charity(-ies) with a populist & gender parity focus – for the average runner/walker (including the novices) and also for the seasoned, serious racer. ***
World Run (and Walk) Day is a November event begun 1999 as a “concept” which promotes a linkage between the running/walking ACTIVITY and CHARITY … with a mission to highlight the benefits of running/walking and to foster humanitarian efforts worldwide. Runners/walkers run/walk any distances they desire, alone or with others, in a race or fun event/outing, and then donate to any charity of their choice anywhere in the world. They also record their distances, finish times and charity info on the Web. It’s a win win win…! More details can be found on the Web at www.runday.com. ***
Over the years we’ve engaged a number of themes with our races. Peace -- in a world with unending warring and rampant killing – is critical for if we succeed in obliterating ourselves, then there will be no tomorrow. And then, of course, nothing else will matter. . As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once put it, wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows…” Gender equality & parity is another theme in a world where women and girls continue to be savaged, abused, subjugated, marginalized, “dissed” – at will. It’s disgracefully ugly! There also is Hunger. Every year, hunger claims the lives of millions of men, women and children across the globe – millions dying from an agonizing, painful and passive violence of hunger!. Even here at home, there is widespread hunger where, every day, millions don’t have enough – or anything at all – to eat. Criminal, I’d say! This year we’re continuing our little effort to do something about hunger locally with a World Run Day race. On a global scene, one nagging problem has to do with children and their welfare. United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is one organization that has stayed at the forefront of efforts to address children’s issues worldwide. ***
So for this race, net proceeds will benefit two organizations, one with a local impact; the other with a global audience. The first organization is Community Food Bank of Fort Worth [www.food-bank.org], a local entity --serving needy families in Fort Worth and Tarrant County. The second organization is United Nations children’s fund (UNICEF) [www.unicef.org], a global entity –working toward the day when ZERO children die from preventable
causes and every child has a safe and healthy childhood.
