Finisher Medal & Helmet Sticker

Description

October is National Roller Skating Month!  What better way for roller skaters to celebrate than participating in a virtual skate challenge.   The Skate The Distance Virtual Challenge will be open the entire month of October.  The goal is to skate as many miles as you can and share your accomplishments with the community.  Miles earned are miles earned so you can get them whenever and wherever you are able to skate: trails, rinks, sidewalks, garage, or your kitchen!!! The aim is to encourage participants to get out and skate.  Participants are encouraged to join the Skate the Distance Facebook Group and share their achievements throughout the month.  Each participant will be able to login to their RunSignup account and enter their activities.  Both the Children's Shelter and the community skating group, Skaters on the Roll-San Antonio, will receive a portion of the profits.

This virtual skating challenge is open to anyone but shipping is only available to the continental United States.

Finisher Medal & Helmet Sticker

Your registration comes with a finisher medal and helmet sticker.

Children's Shelter in San Antonio, Texas

A portion of the profits will go to a local non-profit.  The Children's Shelter has been providing a safe haven for child survivors of abuse, neglect, and abandonment in San Antonio and Bexar County since 1901.

Mission: Restoring Innocence. Strengthening Families.

The Children’s Shelter puts children first by providing a safe, trauma-focused place for children in crisis whether the need is for immediate shelter, residential treatment, foster or adoptive homes. We work to strengthen families in order to break the cycle of child abuse and offer specialized mental health services for children affected by maltreatment.

Each child who resides at The Children’s Shelter is provided a safe place to live and food to eat; new clothes and shoes; mental, physical and dental healthcare; on-campus or off-campus schooling; trauma-informed care by adults; art and other normalcy activities; and, most importantly, a place to begin healing from the trauma they have experienced.

How To Skate The Distance Virtually

Virtual skating is basically skating with other people - just not all at the same place or even at the same time!

No crowds, no parking hassles, no waiting in line for a portable toilet, no worries about the weather.

Virtual miles can be entered for miles gained from October 1st through October 31st.  You will have until November 5th to enter your results.

Finisher medals and stickers will be distributed early-mid November.  More specific details will be provided when medals are ordered.

How to prepare for a virtual distance skate:

• continue to train like it is an in-person event

• plan your routes - Please skate in populated public places and always let someone in your family or friend group know where you are going and how long you will be there. Sharing your location with them using your cellphone when meeting someone new is a best practice that could save your life. Please, be aware of you surroundings at all times and if you feel uneasy - leave and call 911

• stage hydrated 💦, take pictures 📸, track distance,  enter results, and earn your finisher medal 🏅

• your skate, your pace - whether you aim for a personal victory against the clock ⌚ or enjoy a social pace while chatting virtually with friends, you are in control

• share your accomplishment on social media 🦢🏅🙌 and the Skate the Distance Facebook Group

• upload your miles earned on the Skate the Distance results page

• We ask that you adhere to the CDC Guidelines as much as possible. Understanding that skating may require touching, being close, and helping others’ in the event of falling, dangerous conditions, etc. As a reminder, you can find the full CDC Guidelines here.

• Please be mindful of safety practices at all times.  We want to encourage all skaters to wear gear when appropriate. While ultimately this is a personal decision made by you, we’d like you to continue skating for a long time - and protection is very important to us.

• Don't forget to celebrate! 🎉🎉
