Herron Half Marathon, 10K and 5K Trail Run

Sun June 9, 2024 Kalispell, MT 59901 US Directions

Course set up

June 9, 2024

Details

Set up begins on Saturday before the race around 3 pm. One or two fit people will set up the top half of the 1/2 marathon course, which involves >11 miles walking. Two to three people will set up the lower half of the 1/2 marathon course, which is also the 10k course. The 5k course has a small overlap with the other two races and will be set up by these "lower course" folks. See website map for details. Will need small pack, good shoes, water, and food. Budget ~3 hours.

Parking lot management

June 9, 2024

Details

Direct cars into spots so that we can maximize the number of vehicles that fit into the horse stables and the Herron Park lot. Will need to block off areas along the highway and side road. Dick Lauer has overseen this for the past several years and is planning to be back this year at the task. Please arrive at 7 am. and budget 2 hours.

First/Third Aid Station on half marathon course

June 9, 2024

Details

This aid station will initially be set up at the top of the single track Chase trail where it hits the logging road that goes up to the Chase Overlook. Half marathon runners will be initially coming by around 4.5 miles into their race. This station will then be moved down ~100 yds to where there is a junction of logging roads. Racers will be running down this upper logging road, so you will see them again about 9.5 miles into their race. Brian M will provide supplies, including a table & coolers with water & HEED as well as Hammer gels. Bring your own camp chair, warm clothes/rain gear, and snacks.

Second Aid Station on half marathon course

June 9, 2024

Details

People attending this aid station will drive in a pick up provided by either a key volunteer or race director to the end of this old Plum Creek logging road, which is at the bottom of the section known as "Hike-a-bike." Brian M will provide supplies, including a table & coolers with water & HEED as well as Hammer gels. Bring your own camp chair, warm clothes/rain gear, and snacks.

Fourth/final aid station for half & 10k races

June 9, 2024

Details

This aid station will be at the sharp turn both 1/2 marathon and 10k racers must take as they descend the Plum Creek road. Aid station volunteers can ensure racers make this switch back to the merging logging road (see race map on main race web page). Brian M will provide supplies, including a table & coolers with water & HEED as well as Hammer gels. Bring your own camp chair, warm clothes/rain gear, and snacks.

Course Marshals

June 9, 2024

Details

There are many key intersections in each race course where merging trails may confused tired, highly focused racers - even though these intersections may be well marked. Volunteers can help direct racers down the right path while cheering them on. Brian M will assign you to the exact location. Bring your own camp chair, warm clothes/rain gear, snacks and water.

Registration table/swag hand out

June 9, 2024

Details

This position will involve handing out bibs to racers as they check in, collect money from late registrations and enter their information into computers provided by Competitive Timing, have parents/guardians sign waivers for the kids' race, and answer basic questions. As racers begin to finish, you will hand out swag bags. You can often rope in kids wanting a job to help with swag handout. During the awards ceremony, you can help organize ribbons that the race director provides to top finishers.

Kids' Race helper

June 9, 2024

Details

This position will involve helping set up the 1 km course with pink flagging well before the race begins around 11:30 am, assist the other registrars with signing kids up for the race (with parent signatures on release forms), handing out stickers to all finishing participants, and keeping track of the first 3 girls' and first 3 boys' finishers for a brief award ceremony at the end.

Medical assistants

June 9, 2024

Details

All volunteers in this category will be under the coordination of Dr. Deb Hoffman and Dr. Morgan Coleman. We will decide on race morning or by email where best to place you on the course, depending on the number of volunteers with this expertise that we get.

Course sweep

June 9, 2024

Details

One or more people can do the 1/2 marathon and 10k course together. Another person can do the 5k course (unless one person is very motivated to do it all...). Can start as soon as the last race starts or can wait a bit (if you want to go at a faster pace than the slowest racers). Please stay back from the last racer so they don't feel pressured.
