Course Marshals are vitally important for a safe and successful race! They are stationed along the entire length of the course to keep runners safe and on course. They direct runner traffic and cheer runners enthusiastically. Some of these shifts are a tad long and it is highly recommended you wear comfortable shoes, clothes, water/snack, and even a chair depending on location assigned. You cannot leave your assigned station until the sweep vehicle or zone captain releases you. We will have some relief folks that come around on bicycles that will give you a break for a few minutes while you go to the nearest aid station for a snack and/or nature break.

Relay Team Liaison Medium Priority

Details

These all-star volunteers will be responsible for accounting for all relay team members. They will make sure all the team members are on the appropriate buses, they will accompany the buses to the different relay transition points, and account for all relay team members that have finished their relay leg. location depends on your time slot. the earliest slot is at the Spur aid station (where the big bike statues are), the second is at River's Edge South, and the third is at VTC on Jefferson Street (between Reserve Ave & Riverside Circle). Park in the Carilion garage.

Bike Relief

Details

We need several volunteers on bikes to ride the course from course marshal to course marshal offering a rest break so they can go to the nearest aid station to use the restroom and refill water, etc. We will provide a map and a section of course to ride, and you will do a loop several times until the last runners go through.

Medical Volunteers

You must be 18-90 years old to volunteer for this task.

Details

Medical volunteers will be needed at each aid station and at the finish line. Time of assignment will vary depending on your assigned location. A pre-race briefing will occur at 6:00 am at the finish line/medical tent area. All medical volunteers must be currently certified as an EMT, Paramedic, LPN, RN, PA or MD and must submit credentials prior to race day. If not in contact with Dr. Kasmer, please list your medical license number in the "Note to Race" box during registration. Medical students interested in 'shadowing' please contact Dr. Kasmer at mekasmer@carilionclinic.org Time slots will vary; aid stations volunteers may finish as early as 11:00 am, whereas other later in the day may start at 9:00 am and finish closer to 3 pm. Please let us know your availability.

Course Sweeper-10 K

The Course Sweeper will follow the final runner in the 10K to communicate progress to headquarters. The volunteer must provide their own bicycle and be prepared to ride up and down Mill Mtn. At check-in, pick up a bib & radio.

Details

The volunteer will follow the last marathon runner on bicycle and check-in regularly with headquarters to update on progress. The position requires an experienced bicycle rider. The marathon goes up Roanoke Mtn., Mill Mtn., and Peakwood Dr.

Lead Cyclist

This position is for an accomplished cyclist. You'll lead the Anthem Star-K leader to the finish chute. You may join up with the lead pack at the top of Mill Mountain so that you don't have to "race" the climb up Mill Mountain with the leaders.

The Slow-K is an untimed, relaxed 5K on the Greenway. There will be mimosa's, coffee, doughnuts, water for the participants. Coffee mugs will be handed out to participants at the end of the race. This aid station is at about mile 15 of the Full Marathon course. You'll see runners twice- once on their way to the turnaround and once on their way back. Aid Station volunteers provide food and drinks to runners, and enthusiastically encourage them on the course. Volunteers MUST be in place by 8:00 AM and navigate to the aid station via SE Roanoke due to road closures.
