Description
This adventure will take you from Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea up and over the Owen Stanley range, to the famed station town of Kokoda, the site of a vital airstrip key to Allied and Japanese success in determining the fate of Port Moresby and, by extension, the security of Australia. From there, you will continue over the Kumsi River, past the slopes of the volcanic mount Lamington to Popondetta and finally, Buna, on the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea, where, in 1943, Allied forces reclaimed the beachheads from which the Japanese advance began in 1942.
Your participation in this event will help local communities along the route taken as you learn more about the history of the battles which carved the name Kokoda into the history or world events. You'll also learn about the land and people of the region today. As you advance along the route, hitting historical mileposts, you will receive messages updating you on your position, it's history and pictures from your location. And, at the end of your coast to coast journey, you will have earned yourself a tangible prize, shipped to your door, as a reminder of your accomplishments on this adventure.
