The Quarantine

Sat April 11, 2020

Home / Quarantine Location

The Quarantine is a virtual race that you can do at home by any means necessary. You could do a treadmill, or you could do it the fun way and create a course around your house, yard, kitchen table, balcony, or whatever else you can come up with. Full lock-down rules are encouraged, and you're discouraged from going out in public to complete your chosen distance, even if you're allowed to under your area's current regulations. A portion of every racer's entry fee will be donated to a charity that directly supports the fight against COVID-19.

The official race date is April 11th, 2020, but you can complete the race at any time. Results can be submitted between April 10th and April 19th. You do not need to post a time if you don't want to. This is entirely built on the honor system.

If you're in your yard, you could probably use a GPS watch with relatively decent accuracy. If you're inside, you'll likely have to measure it out and count laps. It's easy to lose track when you're doing this, so a good tip is to use something like a whiteboard or a handheld tally counter.

Race swag is still in the process of being figured out due to production limitations associated with the Coronavirus and workplace shutdowns. If you choose swag in your race registration, there will likely be a delay in receiving it. You also have the option to forgo receiving any physical swag and opt to donate the cost of production to charity. Digital swag will be provided for you to flaunt and share on social media.

What if my current living situation doesn't really make this possible?

The "full lock-down" rule is only encouraged and not a hard-and-fast rule. This is all just about participation and participation in a way that doesn't negatively affect our current situation in society. Feel free to do the race in a parking lot, around your block, down the street, or whatever you want. The only thing that will change is your story and a potentially once in a lifetime experience. Regardless, try to keep your course under a mile long for the full spirit of the event. The shorter it is and the more times your have to repeat it, the better.

Can I run this with a group if we maintain social distancing guidelines?

The most common state and local regulations currently highly discourage people from intentionally meeting up with others outside of their own household, even under the 6' distance rule. Like most things in this race, there isn't a hard and fast rule in this, just use common sense. If you want company and also want to share the coolness of this event, consider using video chats along the way or live streaming to a social network.

Could you explain the timeline a bit more?

The official race date is April 11th at whatever time you want it to be. If that date doesn't work for you, feel free to do it at any other time and you can submit your results or just submit that you finished at any point from April 10th through April 19th.

If you want to spread the distance out over several days, you can (because one of our biggest rules is that we really don't have many rules), but you're encouraged to finish your distance in a single day, and even better if it's in a single push.

So, do I run, walk, rollerblade, bike, kayak, unicycle, Eliptigo, skateboard, ride a penny farthing, give my children piggy back rides, or do something else?

What else can I do to help?

This event is in the unique position where it can get as big as we can possibly make it and even has the potential to reach a global scale. The single biggest thing you can do to help is to spread the word and brag about it if you signed up for it. The more people we have doing this, the more social and impactful it will become. Invite people to the Facebook group (even if it's just as observers) and flaunt your participation!
