On September 8, 2024, I will be challenging myself to swimming across one of the widest sections of the Hudson River, the three miles between Nyack, NY and Sleepy Hollow, NY.
This gap is symbolic of the economic gap that exists between households across Westchester, one of the wealthiest places in the world, and yet also where thousands of people, especially children, face economic hardship and hunger daily. When we consider the high cost of living, or even the cost of rent and childcare alone, families may still face food insecurity even when parents are working full time. Families need to eat today as we work toward solutions to economic inequities over a longer term.
The event is organized by The Lighthouse Swim, Inc, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the beautiful Hudson River while supporting our community and raising funds in support of local charities. This year, The Lighthouse Swim will be donating primarily to Feeding Westchester, which is a member of Feeding America, the nationwide nonprofit network of more than 200 food banks serving every state in the United States. Feeding Westchester serves nearly 220,000 people each month in our community.
