Race Rules

Below are highlights of the rules for the 57th Around The Island® Swim.

Full rules can be obtained by emailing our Race Director at jwopenwater@gmail.com.  Rules will be reviewed at the pre-race safety meeting.

WARMUPS

Warmups will be available at the Brigantine Aquatic Center (3118 Bayshore Avenue, Brigantine, NJ 08203) prior to race day.  Please contact our Race Director Sari Carroll at sariswims@gmail.com to confirm your space.

SWIMMER CAPACITY

This open water swim has a capacity of 8 individual athletes (regardless of gender).  The number of Relay Teams (both Mixed and "Solitare Cup" categories) is at the discretion of the Selection Committee as approved by the City of Atlantic City.

PRE-RACE MEETINGS

All participants must attend both mandatory pre-race meetings on Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30, 2023.

All participants will be provided an optional JITNEY tour around the course on Saturday, July 29, 2023.  This tour will view the course and will stop at several places along the course to enable the participants to see how the water moves in each location.

TOW-REST FLOAT

All swimmers must use a tow-rest float, including all members of a relay team.  This is both for swimmer safety and to aid in visibility of the swimmer.  Swimmers may provide their own or purchase one during the registration process.

WETSUIT POLICY

Wetsuits are not required or recommended.  However, if an individual athlete or any member of a relay team plans on wearing a wetsuit, you must inform the Race Director no later than the pre-race safety meeting on Saturday, July 29, 2023.

SEVERE WEATHER PLAN

Race Staff, the City of Atlantic City Office of Emergency Management, Heads of applicable Beach Patrols, and/or our Independent Safety Monitor reserve the right to cancel this event if conditions are determined to be unsafe for swimmers.  If conditions during the race are such that it is determined there is a risk to swimmers and the call is made to immediately abandon the race, an air horn will be used to signal the cancellation and each safety boat will be radioed. The abandonment signal is five short blasts followed by one prolonged blast of air horns and/or whistles.  Swimmers will be removed from the water and taken to shore/safety.  This signal will be repeated every minute until the course is cleared and all swimmers are accounted for.  Should the water temperature anywhere along the course go below 60.8°F, the Race Referee & Race Director reserve the right to cancel the race.
