June 7, 2025 San Angelo, TX 76903 US

Run in the Sun Scholarship

A $500 scholarship (or more, depending on donations) will be awarded each year to one graduating high school senior who demonstrates a strong commitment to and appreciation of running.

Deadline: Applications must be received by May 31.
Notification: The recipient will be notified in early June.
Announcement: The winner will be publicly announced at the Run in the Sun race on June 7.
Disbursement: The scholarship check will be mailed directly to the recipient’s college, university, trade school, or certificate program.

All responses here will be evaluated by the San Angelo Road Lizards board, but will otherwise be kept confidential. The information given here will not be used in any way after the winner is selected.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be graduating in the current school year from a high school in the San Angelo area. This includes all high schools within 20 miles of the San Angelo city center (e.g., Grape Creek, Veribest, Wall, Christoval, etc.). Homeschool students are also eligible if they reside within this area.
  • Be planning to enroll as a full-time student in the upcoming Fall semester at an accredited college, university, trade school, or certificate program.
  • Show evidence of past interest in and commitment to running.
  • Express a clear intention to continue running in the future.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required criteria, preference may be given to applicants who demonstrate:

  • Current good standing on their high school track or cross-country team.
  • Strong academic performance.
  • Active participation in extracurricular activities—especially running in or volunteering at local races and SARL events.
  • Evidence of good citizenship and community involvement in the San Angelo area.
  • Willingness to participate in an interview, if requested.
The SARL board has final approval of to whom any scholarships will be awarded. If, according to the board’s discretion, no applicant shows substantial evidence of the above points, then no scholarship will be awarded that year. In that case, any funds donated specifically for the scholarship will be rolled over to the next year. If, according to the board's discretion, there are two applicants whose qualifications are equal, a tie will be declared and the scholarship money will be split evenly between the two applicants.
