Lafayette Res Run for Education FAQs

Race Extended through Tuesday, November 3: We are extending the event through Tuesday, November 3 so that everyone has plenty of time to participate in their race.

When can I run? Run any time, any day during daylight hours through November 3! The Lafayette Reservoir is open 6:30am-7pm in October, 6:30am-5:30pm starting November 1. For safety, we encourage you to run only during daylight hours. https://www.ebmud.com/recreation/east-bay/lafayette-reservoir

Where do I park? Since the event this year takes place over a two week period, park anywhere where it is legal. All parking meters are now being enforced. Free parking is available at the Lafayette BART Station on weekends. If you are choosing the Reservoir Challenge, park at the Lafayette Reservoir. Two choices: metered or daily use parking is available.  There is no additional charge if you have an annual pass.

Do I have to wear my shirt? Only if you want to.  Wear it wherever and whenever you can.  The race and our sponsors get a little extra love that way.

Do I need to wear my bib? You do not need to wear your bib, but if you do, where it with honor. There is no chip attached to this bib, you will need to track and post your own time (race results.)

Do I have to wear my mask? You must follow all current guidelines that have been set by the Contra Costa County Health Services. We encourage you to wear your mask at all times and certainly around others.

Can I run with friends? It is recommended you stay in your Social Distancing Bubble this year.  If you do run with friends, make sure you are at least 6-10 feet away from each other, and keep your mask on at all times.

What do I need to know about the Lafayette Reservoir? Visit their website here for hours, parking and other information.

Can I run on the street? The streets will not be closed this year.  For the 2 mile, 5k, and 10k, please run on the sidewalk on the South side of Mt. Diablo Blvd.  All three races start and end at the same place (Starbucks Coffee, corner of Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Lafayette Circle.)  Please be careful and watch for vehicles at all interactions.  Cross traffic at Mountain View (Trader Joe’s) can be tricky.  Watch the signal.

Are the Mile Markers marked? Yes, all four races are color coded.  The 2 mile is green.  5k is blue, 10k is orange and the Reservoir Challenge is black and white.

Will there be water stations? No, due to the pandemic, there will NOT be water stations. Please carry water with you. There are also no bathroom facilities for runners in downtown Lafayette; only partial bathroom openings at the Reservoir.

Am I actually in a race? The Lafayette Res Run for Education 2020 is a virtual race but physical run/walk. This means you physically participate in the run/walk but you then log your time (ie. results.) Your ranking will then be provided and the top three will receive medals.  It’s an honor system this year!

What makes this year’s run different from previous year’s runs? First, we are not gathering at the starting location on a specific day or time. Second, we are not running on the street. Third, you will need to track and post your own time (race results.) And fourth, we added a new race – the Lafayette Reservoir Challenge!

Will I get a medal? Everyone can get a medal this year.  Add it to your cart when you register for $5.  We will be giving Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for the 5k, 10k and Reservoir Challenge this year for the top three male and female per age group with the best times.  If you identify as a different gender, and your time is the best, the medal is yours!

Can I run from anywhere? Can I run my race using a different course? Yes! If you prefer to run at a difference location, simply track your time and record your results.

What if I want to change my distance? If you want to change the distance your originally registered for, email Sara at sara@lafayettechamber.org.

When is t-shirt/race pickup? T-shirts will arrive October 12th. We plan to sort them on the 13th and hopefully, have each school pick them up and distribute at their own school with their own volunteers. We also have some hours on Oct. 14th and 15th for race packet pickups at the Lafayette Chamber office parking lot, 251 Lafayette Circle.

How does the app work? If you choose to utilize the RaceJoy App, press "start" to begin your run and the system will calculate distance/time. The system will automatically determine the participant is "finished" once they have completed the set distance. View this document to learn more about using the app.

Do I need to download the app? In order to use the GPS tracking functionality, yes. This, however, isn't a requirement to participate in the race.

How do I find the app? There are instructions on the registration page. Instructions are also provided on the confirmation email. Additionally, attached is a document that may be helpful. The app is available for both iOS and Android.

Why should I submit my time? The top three times from each race will receive a medal! Although this isn't something that everyone will want to do (and certainly nobody has to) this is an engaging way of feeling a part of the event. The main goal of the event is physical fitness and supporting our schools. The reason we've implemented the tools and functionality is to motivate participants to participate in the race.

If I go to the starting line and hit go on my app, will it tell me when I’m done? Yes!

How can the app benefit me? Not all participants will want to utilize this app, however it's easy to use and assists with tracking.

How do I start the app if I’m not at one of the actual race points and prefer to run on the trail or other course? You select the "anywhere" option. and there will be a button to "start" your race wherever you are.

How do I entice my school children to run with me? Zoonies! For each 100 students registered for the run from each school a gift certificate for a free 1/4 lb of bulk candy will be included at packet pickup! Yes, even the 3 high schools!!

When (and what) is the Early Bird Competition?  The race before the race runs through Sept 30th. The school that has the most registrations at midnight on Wednesday, Sept 30th will win bragging rights and an additional $500 bonus contest check.

How do the schools benefit from this fundraiser? For nearly 30 years the Chamber has been organizing this event to raise money for our local schools and the Chamber.  Last year we were able to share over $28K with our schools.  The money goes directly to the individual schools’ PTA.

Can you sponsor a teacher or staff member? YES!  Click here. Support our great teachers by sponsoring their registration! By purchasing a registration sponsorship, a teacher will get to participate in this year's Lafayette Res Run at no charge to them. If you'd like to sponsor a specific teacher, please indicate the specific teacher/school you'd like to sponsor. Alternatively, you can indicate your favorite school and we'll offer your sponsored registration to the staff of that school.
